The Delhi Lt-Governor’s sanction to the CBI to prosecute former MP and Congress leader Sajjan Kumar for his alleged involvement in the horrendous 1984 anti-Sikh riots is indicative of the Centre’s belated resolve to bring the culprits to book. That it took as many as 25 years for the authorities to seek his prosecution for his questionable role in the riots that followed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination is inexplicable.
Acts alone do not help in the promotion or prevention of a language from going into the oblivion. Punjabi is a glaring example of official apathy and neglect.
Though the previous Indian National Lok Dal government had amended its Official Language Act, granting Punjabi the status of second language, it is yet to be implemented in the state. It’s the same with the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Teaching of Punjabi as a language in schools or its use in official work has been virtually abandoned by the Chandigarh Administration.
Indian MP Tarlochan Singh visited Colby College, Waterville, America recently. His lectures and speeches were highly appreciated by students and teachers alike and he even got a standing ovation from the house of representatives and senate.
THERE ARE not many people who inspire others to stay connected with the past while building modern edifices. Tarlochan Singh, the parliamentarian is one of them. With his vast experience in various aspects of public life combined with the warmth and charm of the old world, he stands tall and communicative.
[Minority-bashing] has been going on ever since the partition of the country. Quite understandably, the main target was our largest minority, the Muslims, who were held responsible for the division of India. Christians came next because large sections, mainly tribals and lower castes, converted to Christianity to escape cruel discrimination. Even Sikhs who were close to Hindus were not spared.
